It's a pity he couldn't make it to PulpCon.

I'll see if I can dig up any more information on him.Sai Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14480681895921130917noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4099827080854690588.post-15225910430509243502015-05-23T06:14:35.208-07:002015-05-23T06:14:35.208-07:00This article mentions how Howard Bloomfield was ed...This article mentions how Howard Bloomfield was editor of DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY during 1928-1934. I have almost all the issues of DFW and many years ago I noticed that the magazine really improved a lot somewhere around 1929 or 1930. In the mid twenties it was hopeless with a lot of stodgy cozy mysteries but Bloomfield improved the fiction by publishing a more hard boiled and realistic story. The Lester Leith series was a big success especially because of the whacky plots and humor.

In the 1980's I contacted Bloomfield and told him about how his old friend, publisher Harry Steeger, was appearing as a guest of honor at the Pulpcons. He wrote me back a nice letter saying he had fond memories of sailing with Steeger and I got the impression he was willing to also appear as a guest at Pulpcon. But my attempts to convince the Pulpcon committee to invite him came to nothing and we missed out on having him attend.

He really had a large part in reviving two pulps. DFW was in the doldrums and he saved it and ADVENTURE was going downhill in the early 1930's and he revived it when Popular Publications took over in 1934.Walker Martinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16089880902426182100noreply@blogger.com
